Frequently Asked Questions
What is Liminal?
Liminal is a branding and communications agency that works with equity-centered nonprofits. We help organizations clarify their message, strengthen their brand, and raise more money.
What does the word "liminal" mean?
Liminal describes the space between where you are and where you want to go, like a hallway or an airport you pass through to reach somewhere else. We chose the name because that is where our clients usually are when they come to us.
Who does Liminal work with?
Liminal works with nonprofits and social impact organizations focused on justice and equity, including racial justice, community development, human rights, and public policy.
Does Liminal only work with nonprofits?
Yes. Liminal works only with nonprofits and social impact organizations, and we also support colleges and universities through a dedicated higher education practice.
What makes Liminal different from other agencies?
Liminal is led by former nonprofit executives and fundraisers who have held the same roles as our clients. That firsthand experience shapes how we advise on messaging, brand, and fundraising.
Where is Liminal located, and do you work remotely?
Liminal has team members in Raleigh and Charlotte, North Carolina; Portland, Oregon; Atlanta, Georgia; Guatemala City; and Panama City, Panama. We work with nonprofits across the United States and internationally.
How does the Liminal process work?
Liminal works in three phases: Clarify, Design, and Activate. We clarify your message through research and interviews, design a visual identity and website from that message, then activate it across your campaigns and communications.
